The Objection Playbook. What They Mean. What to Say.
Fourteen push-backs every rep hears, what each one really means, how to tell them apart, and replies that work. From Merdial’s built-in sales canon, the same one its real-time AI assist starts from.
The push-backs
- “Not interested”They object to being interrupted, not to the offer; nothing has been evaluated yet, so there is no position to argue with.
- “We don’t need that”They believe the problem this solves does not exist for them, or is already handled well enough.
- “Call me next quarter”The problem may be real but something else owns their attention or budget right now.
- “We already use someone”They already use a solution or a vendor and do not see enough reason to change.
- “I don’t see the value”They understand the offer but do not yet believe it is worth the cost, time or change for them.
- “We’re too small for this”Something about their situation genuinely does not match what is sold; size, use case, stack, geography.
- “It’s not a priority”They accept the problem and the fit, but it ranks below other things competing for the same attention.
- “It’s too expensive”Cost is the stated barrier; either real budget absence or a signal that value has not outrun price yet.
- “I’m not the decision maker”The person cannot or will not decide alone; someone else owns the budget, the signature or the tool.
- “Never heard of you”They doubt the company, the claims, or the rep; the product might be fine, the risk of believing it is not.
- “It’d be too big a change”The cost and disruption of switching or adopting feels larger than the benefit.
- “Just send me an email”A polite way of ending the call; they are not asking for information, they are asking to stop.
- “We’re also looking at others”They are actively evaluating alternatives and are testing how this one stacks up; a buying behaviour, not a no.
- “I’m still not sure”A worry raised earlier; or never said aloud; is still blocking; the new objection is a symptom of it.
